Hickory
Latin name: Carya glabra, Carya cordiformis
Origin: South Eastern Canada and Eastern United States
Characteristics: Heartwood varies from brown to reddish-brown while sapwood is generally white – off white. Logs tend to have equal proportions of heart and sapwood and have a very narrow heart. The use of the natural color contrast if often referred to as “calico” much like a calico or multi colored cat. This gives a very rustic appearance. Logs can be found with mostly heartwood and the narrow heart makes it desirable for quarter grain.
Uses: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture, kitchen cabinetry and plywood faces.
