Koa

Latin name: Acacia koa

Origin: Hawaiian Islands

Characteristics: Color is somewhat dependant on the island it comes from. The richest color tends to come from the big island. Heartwood is reddish to dark golden brown with irregular dark brown growth rings and streaking. Grain is interlocked, sometimes wavy or curly, producing fiddleback figure. Texture is medium and even with an extremely lustrous surface. At one time reserved only for royalty on the Hawaiian Islands.

Uses: High quality architectural woodwork, fine furniture and musical instruments.
