Makore, Figured
Latin name: Tieghmella heckelii
Origin: Africa
Characteristics: Heartwood color varies from pink-red to blood-red and red-brown. Quarter cut figured is by far the greatest in demand. Logs tend to be very large making it great specie for projects with large sequences. The most common figure is block mottle or a broken figure which can look like a lightning bolt or square blocks making a checkerboard appearance. Fiddleback figure is also seen but is far harder to find and sells for much higher prices. Rotary material with a pommele figure is also available. The pommele tends to be larger in scale than Sapeli and some logs develop a fair amount of pips or pins.
Use: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and musical instruments.
