Latin name: Acer saccharum

Origin: Northern United States

Characteristics: Birds eye maple is rotary produced so slight changes in color often occur within one log from a yellowish-white on the outside to reddish as you approach the heart. The “birdseye” pattern is scattered “buds” or “pins” giving the effect of a birdseye. Some logs also have a quilting or pillow like figure in the background making it very three dimensional. Logs frequently have green or black mineral spots and / or ‘sugar’. Currently fashionable to dye many different colors.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
