Moabi, Figured

Latin name: Baillonella toxisperma

Origin: West Africa

Characteristics: Heartwood color is light reddish-brown to light red, sometimes with a grayish tinge. The most common figure type is a fine broken line figure that sometimes develops into almost a bee’s wing. A fine Fiddleback figure occurs but like in Makore is hard to come by. Rotary material with a pommele figure is also available. The pommele tends to be larger in scale than Sapeli and some logs develop a fair amount of pips or pins. Often you see a fair percentage of sap because the pommele is stronger developed in the outer layers of the log and disappears towards the center.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
