Beech

Latin name: Fagus sylvatica

Origin: Europe

Characteristics: White to blonde-off white color in natural “unsteamed” veneer. Logs are often cooked for a longer period of time to even out and enhance the color to a pink or flesh color. This veneer is referred to as “steamed”. Can develop an interesting “herringbone” figure and often has a light “flecking” in the quarters. Beech is produced and consumed in very large quantities in Europe mush as “oak” is in the United States. In some areas Beech tends to buckle as a result of irregular growth ring formation.

Uses: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and kitchen cabinetry.
