Poplar

Latin name: Populus spp.

Origin: Europe

Characteristics: Heartwood is typically olive to grey in color, sometimes pale brown and with purple streaking. It is a soft hardwood and generally not used for face grade applications. Its “wispy” or “flamed” cathedrals in plain sliced are similar to what you see in walnut.  Some manufacturers have offered white poplar with a heavy dark finish as an economical walnut substitute.

Use: Furniture, doors and backing.
