Oak, Bog
Latin name: Quercus spp.
Origin: Europe
Characteristics: Generally available in European white oak. Bog oak comes from salvage logs that have been lying in river beds or shallow streams and have discolored. Color varies from blue-black to brownish-black, depending on how long logs have lain. Most desirable logs have taken on black or blue color on outer edges, but are still dark to light brown in the heart.
Use: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and doors.
