Sycamore, Figured

Latin name: Acer pseudoplatanus

Origin: Europe

Characteristics: Almost white in color, wood yellows under light and air exposure if veneers are not dried quickly. Demand is mostly for true quarters but plain sliced is also produced. Quarterd material often develops an intense “fiddleback” figure. True fiddleback figure is often defined as figure that runs 90 degrees to the grain but more often the figure is at a slight angle making a “chevron” pattern when book matched. Some logs develop  a unique broken figure. Some material has recently been available as FSC pure. The most common defect is green mineral which can be scattered throughout the log. Logs without pin knots are rare.

Use: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and musical instruments.
